Trade-up Daily Routines and Enhance Your Health
(ARA) - People know healthful habits can benefit their well-being, but often come up with excuses for not sticking to them. Avoiding flossing due to discomfort and skipping the gym as a result of a hectic schedule are just a few of the excuses people use to relieve the guilt.
"Living a long and healthy life can actually be achieved more simply than people have been led to believe," says Dr.Thomas Perls, famed aging expert and author of "Living to 100." "While DNA still matters, changing only a few habits at a time can also make a world of difference in how long we live."
Dr. Perls offers tips on ways to upgrade and trade-up your old-fashioned daily routines to enhance your health, while making them more enjoyable to incorporate.
Upgrade Your Exercise Regimen -- Everyone knows they should exercise for 30 minutes a day and many do go running and participate in other aerobic exercises. But what many don't know is that they still might be missing a key exercise. A lot of women do not strength train because they fear gaining weight, but building muscle actually helps to more effectively burn calories and fat. Muscle build-up also helps decrease harmful inflammatory substances in the body and helps build cognitive health. So when thinking of your daily exercise routine, budget time for aerobic exercise as well as some strength training.
Trade up Your Old-Fashioned Floss -- Replace old-fashioned, white box floss in the corner of your medicine cabinet, with one that makes this healthy habit a better experience. Oral-B Satin Floss is made of satin-like fibers that rest comfortably against your fingers and slide smoothly between teeth and below the gum line to remove plaque.
Trade up Your Diet -- Consumers should try to avoid red meat and trade up to a Mediterranean diet consisting of fish, poultry and vegetables. People believe that the risks associated with red meat are due to increased fat and cholesterol, but the bigger risk may be that red meat is also a major source of iron. Too much iron can have a role in making bad free radicals in your body which may accelerate aging and lead to heart disease, cancer and other diseases.
Upgrade Your Work Environment -- Studies show that staring at your computer screen for lengthy amounts of time can hurt your eyes and contribute to stress. It's important to take your eyes off the screen for a few seconds every hour. Try filling your workspace with photos. The photos can help distract your eyes throughout the day and will warm your heart with good memories. Also, trade up your old office for one with windows. Having open windows will let the air circulate and keep airborne viruses at bay.
Upgrade Your Family Time -- The benefits of get-togethers and eating as a family can last longer than the meal does. Eating together keeps the door of communication open, creates bonding time and can often help in stress reduction. Trade up your old-fashioned family dinners by incorporating more fun activities like themed get-togethers and game nights. Reviving family time will create new traditions that will bring happiness to generations to come.
