Saving Secrets for Warm Weather Shopping

(ARA) - Sure the holidays are long gone, but as the weather heats back up, so does the shopping season. With Mother's Day, Father's Day, graduation and summer road trips through Labor Day, this time of year brings its own unique set of saving challenges.

Americans spent an estimated $15.73 billion on Mother's Day shopping in 2007 and about $9.9 billion on Father's Day according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). Spending on both holidays has increased every year since 2005, according to NRF statistics.

So how can you give a gift that will "wow" Mom, Dad or the graduate in your life without jeopardizing your savings? What's the best way to stretch your dollar while taking your family on a summer vacation? Use the same smart shopping strategies that serve you well during the holidays, advises Stephanie Nelson, also known as the "Coupon Mom."

"When it comes to shopping during this time of year, there are real opportunities to save and to make the money you spend really work for you," says Nelson, whose Web site, www.couponmom.com,offers advice on how to get the best shopping deals. Here are a few of her tips:

* Take advantage of online coupons. "Many retailers offer coupons through their Web sites that you can either apply to your online shopping or print out and use in the store," Nelson says. "Also, a host of websites offer coupons for various retailers and specialty stores. Remember to comparison shop for the best coupon deal on items like swimsuits, books for the beach and gifts for graduates. If you signed up for e-newsletters from your favorite retailers, be sure to check them for deals."

* Retailers are savvy and offer numerous sales designed to appeal to gift-seekers at this time of year. "Work the sales with an eye towards planning ahead," Nelson advises. "For example, take advantage of Mother's Day sales for that graduation gift you know you'll need come June."

* Leverage loyalty rewards programs. Auto leasing companies and airlines aren't the only companies who reward loyalty with organized programs. Choose to do business with companies that have their own rewards program, or that participate in national programs like Upromise. A free service, Upromise helps families save for college by giving them money back on purchases - from 1 to 25 percent - at grocery and drug stores, gas stations, restaurants, thousands of retail stores and many online shopping sites. Members can even get money back on big-ticket items like travel and the purchase of a home. The cash earned can then be rolled directly into a qualified 529 plan. Savings details are at www.Upromise.com.

"Even if you're saving up this season, there's no reason to miss out on all the fun that comes along with the warm weather," says Nelson. "From shopping for a graduation gift to buying a car or even a new home, it's easy to find quick and convenient ways to save while you shop."
